For years, I've been scouring the internet for English subtitles just so I could watch this. Eventually, I was like.. how tough can it be? It's set in my hometown after all (a big reason why I was itching to see it so badly). So here a few things that bothered me. I mean I understand the importance of loving and preserving one's language and all that, but why were the Malayali characters villainized to that extent? Even setting politics aside, what's with the way they were speaking? Didn't sound anything like the Kasaragod Malayalam dialect.
Now what's ironic is that, amidst their attempt to cast Malayalis in a negative light, they quietly dip into their creative pool for inspiration.…

Ahh man if anyone ever tells me why preserving native language is important and how it should be made into a sensible film, I would definitely tell them to watch this....
The parts Ananth nag was in were solid 10/10, but rest were a bit repeatative things we have seen in our regular government school drama, they were still captivating enough for me not drop this....
We know were things are going right from start, still the director took more than half the screen time to get there.. this typical Indian film narrative is something that I felt as a major drawback to this film..
The writing and characterizations are realistic, perfect and relatable...
Especially last 20min shows what a brilliant writer Rishab shetty is...
It's not the first of it's kind, but the characters he inserted in, were definitely something u wouldn't get to see in any other films..A good 8/10 that's worth ur time...

Watched this gem 3 years back on my trip back home from college. And here's the review I wrote for it back then:
For a person born and brought up in Karnataka, with Kannada, moving to Vellore to study was hard. I accept I did not value Kannada as much as I value it now, moving to a place where absolutely no one speaks Kannada. Watching SHPSK, I was emotional right from the get go. What a wonderful movie. With wonderful performances, smart but a simple script, beautiful cinematography, the music, the background score. Every single thing about this movie was great. I loved every moment in the theatre.
Anant Nag sir was just a treat to watch. Even though… -

"As Long as a Single Child comes to the school and asks the government to teach him in Kannada. They are entitled to do it."
The Final courtroom scene is so damn strong with Anant Nag just elevating the scene through his immense prescence and his dialogue delivery. Kannada feels so good in his voice. The dialogues in that scene is so well written and credits goes to the writers for that. Vasuki Vaibhav just killed it with those songs. That Assembly song at the start is just so damn Pure, Just Brilliant Stuff.
The way Rishabh handles the scenes of humour and being serious about the subject is just commendable. Each and every character is so neatly written and…

A very sweet film. That has everything in a right place. I don't know kannada and this movie doesn't have subtitles. So this is the only problem i had while watching this film. But this is not a big hurdle to understand this piece of art.
